WAGES ON SMALL SHIPS
OWNERS PROPOSE NEW RATES. By Telegraph.—Press Association. Wellington, Last Night. Owners of small vessels trading on the New Zealand coast have cited the Merchant Service Guild for an awaia affecting captains and officers of these ships. The minimum monthly rates of pay proposed by the owners are: Under 100 tons, masters £25 and mates £2O: 100 to 150 tons., masters £27 10s, mates £2l and second mate® £18; 150 to <3OO tons, masters £29, mates £22 and second mates £l9; 300 to 600 tons, masters £3O, mates £22 and second mates £l9; over 600 tons, masters £3l 10s, mate® £23 and second mates £l9 10s. It is also suggested that the working week should be sixty hours. The Merchant Service Guild has prepared counter-claims involving substantia 1 increases on the rates proposed by the owner®. The hearing of the dispute by the Conciliation Council has been adjourned, pending finality being reached in the seamen’s case now before the Arbitration Court.
