RACING IN ENGLAND. By Telegraph.—Press Assn.—Copyright. London, August 28. Taylor, Tamar’s trainer, still hopes to get the colt fit for the St. Leger. TURF TOPICS. (By "Moturoa.”) Taranaki Hunt Club races on SaturA e,c * s first-class racing are promAcceptances for the Marton spring meeting close to-night. Wanganui J.C. spring handicaps are due on Monday next. Imaribbon is to be mated with the imported Romeo this season. Adrienne and Elvaette have returned to Fellding. Husker promises to carry big money in the Opunake Scurry on Saturday. Gasbag and Rapine were withdrawn from the New Zealand Cup last Friday. Eerie returned a. wonderful price at Hawera. and the majority of her usual followers were “left at the post.” Away from the course Complex and Miss Beatiforte were backed for a ton of money, and the former’s dividend hurt most. Lady Hill appeared to be unlucky at Hawera. and she will take some heading off in the Waihi Hack Handicap on Saturday. Prince Paul was shown up at Hawera, but failed to get round. Possibly Freddie Atkins will have better luck with the St. Paul gelding at New Plymouth. Raffle, which most people persist in misnaming ‘'Raffles,” Is a rattling good mare, and she had bad luck to bump up against Pipl (in receipt of 341b5.) in the Hunters’ Hurdles at Hawera. Raffle is worth following, although well up in the weights. Skylight, who now races in the nomination of Mr. H. Rama, looked big and well last week, and finished close up fourth in the waverley Hack Handicap. They say that Skylight jumps well, so he should pav hfs wav this spring. Another horse that is in fine fettle for the early spring meetings is Roman. Re showed a lot of pace in his one run at Hawera, and only the want of a gallop prevented him from making a one-horse race of it. Next time, out—perhaps! With ordinary luck "Bunny” Abbott would have won the Hunt Cup at Hawera with Marshal Neil. The Gravitation gelding appears to only have to stand up to give the others a headache in the Hunt Cup here on Saturday. The New Zealand Cup candidate. Admiral Codrington, is reported to have wintered well, and is pleasing the track watchers at Hastings. He will make his first appearance this season at Marton.
01c! Argo is getting rougher looking every year, and it is a wonder that Mr. Joi! allows the old fellow to "lag superfluous" upon the race track. Though admittedly a useful hunter in the field, his chance of winning a race is "Buckley’s.”
Jockeys and trainers with a grievance will be pleased to hear that there will be a sitting of the Licensing Committee of the New Zealand Racing Conference at Wanganui during the Wanganui J.C. spring meeting. A good number of jockeys have alreads* applied for a re-hearing of their cases, and the committee is promised a busy tame. A. McCormack was riding well at Hawera on Saturday. He commenced by hopping Miss Beauforte out in front in the Maiden, and rode a nicely judged race, winning narrowly from the promising Husker. His next opportunity was on Complex in the Wlaverley HackHandicap, which he "sneaked” from Lady Hill, whose rider (McCarten) appeared to be outgeneralled. Tn the Flying he had a lazy customer in Sunny Jim to handle, and had no show with 'loman and company, who went very fast from the rise of the barrier, but in the Moumahaki Handicap he rode the sixth favorite, Gay Patron, into • second place behind Loved One, who won' her race at the start.
