DOMINION LADIES' TOURNAMENT. FIRST DAY’S PLAY. By Telegraph.—Press Association. Napier, August 26. The New Zealand ladled’ hockey tournament commenced at Napier to-day in glorious sunshine. Nine teams are competing, including Poverty Bay, Wellington. Hawke’s Bay (A and B), Wairarapa. Fell ding, Marlborough, Eastern (Southland), and Manawatu. The grounds were in splendid order, making play fast in nil matches. Three matches were contested, one in the A grade and two in the B grade. th§ latter especially providing a large attendance of the public with a good exhibition of the game. 'in the morning, Eastern (Southland) met Marlborough in the first game of the A section, the teams being evenly matched. The fast ground at first puzzled the players, who later gained mastery and played fast, open hockey. Eastern attacked strongly in the first half, but were repulsed by solo efforts by Miss Main. The Eastern forwards were much faster and persistently attacked, but lack the finishing touch, and several opportunities were lost through poor following. The second half was very, even, the teams combining better. From a good forward rush Miss McKinna scored for Eastern, Mrs. Hogan equalising for Marlborough. Shortly afterwards the game ended n a draw. Manawatu defeated Wairarapa in the B section, three goals to nil. Goals were scored for Manawatu by Misses Spensley, Green and Scott. The other game in the B section was an easy win for Poverty Bay against Hawke’s Bay B by five goals to nil. A SHIELD MATCH. AUCKLAND AND NELSON DRAW. Nelson, August 26. A hockey shield match, Auckland v. Nelson, was played this afternoon in beautiful weather, and resulted in a draw (2 all), Aucklande thus retaining the shield Nelson scored first after twenty minutes’ rather uninteresting i play, Cassels finding the net. A few minutes later C. Watts equalised the score. With ten minutes to go Auckland broke away, Carr sending a soft one to the net. From a scramble the Nelson forwards again got going and Dee scored. WELLINGTON v. WAIRARAPA. Masterton, Last Night. Wellington defeated Wairarapa by two goals to one. The game was fairly even thrfoughout, though the visitors showed more combina-
