LOANS FROM AMERICA.

WHY BRITAIN BORROWED. MONEY WENT TO ALLIES. By Telegraph.—Press Assn.—Copyright. Received Aug. 27, 5.5 p.m. London, August 25. British official circles, commenting on the Washington announcement relating to the British debt, point out that after America’s entry into the war Brita:n borrowed from the United States £879,000,000 and lent the other Allies £897,000,009. Without the Allies’ demands for assistance the loan from America would have been unnecessary. It should not be forgotten that early in 1918 Britain pressed the United States to relieve her of the responsibility for financing the Allies, offering in return to finance her own expenditure in America, but the United States would not accept this. —Aus.-N.Z.
