HUNT FOR CONVICTS.
EXCITING BATTLE FOLLOWS. By TAleeraph.—Press Assn.—Copyright Received Aug. 27, 5.5 p.m. New York, August 26. A message from Rapid City, South Dakota, states that one of the most remarkable man hunts in the history of the State ended to-day, when a sheriff’s posse, after a ‘ search on horse, motor and aeroplanes, cornered four convicts, who escaped on August 8 from a South Dakota penitentiary. The convicts were speeding in a stolen motor car towards a famous “Badlands” wilderness, where they hoped to find an asylum, when they were met by the posse and a battle ensued. One convict was killed and one sheriff mortally wounded. Two other convicts were wounded and captured, and the last convict escaped in the woods, where he is virtually surrounded.—Aus.N.Z.
