ROAD BLOCKED.

SLIP ON MT. MESSENGER TELEGRAPH LINES BROKEN, A slip, which blocked traffic antcaused interruption in telegraphic communication between New Plymouth and Auckland, occurred on the Main North Road, near the top of Mt. Messenger, about half-past four on Saturday afternoon. A telegraphic repair gang was despatched from New Plymouth yesterday morning and they were successful in restoring communication with the north. It appears that the slip, which is estimated to have brought down about fifty or sixty tons of earth, struck a telegraph pole, whilst trees brought down with the slip broke the wires. A public works gang, consisting of about a dozen men, set to work clearing the material yesterday morning, and it is expected the road will be open again for traffic by this evening. When the Awakino mail came over Mt. Messenger on Saturday there were no signs of the slip, which, being slightly on the New Plymouth side of the hill, was evidently caused by the damp nature of the ground. At present it is impossible for motor-cars to negotiate the road at the point where the slip occurred. The telegraph gang returned to New Plymouth last night, and report that falls of earth are still occurring.
