GANGS OF ROUGHS.
TERROR ON RACECOURSES. By Telegraph.—Press Assn.—Copyright. London. August 24. Gangs of racecourse roughs are becoming more active and the Jockey Club is considering cancelling meetings •on certain courses. Gangs blackmail bookmakers demanding money at each meeting. They await a- favorable opportunity to assault and rob those who refuse. Bookmakers, after having a good day. are followed, held up and compelled to part with large sums. Successful backers are afraid to use the trains, knowing they are being watched with a view to being robbed on their return homeward.
The victims are afraid to inform the police, fearing they will be laid out afterwards. The gangs have been known to wait for weeks for a favorable chance for such revenge. Also conflict's, shooting and stabbing are becoming frequent. They are caused by one gang operating on the ground of another.
