BOROUGH COUNCIL. (From Our Own Correspondent.) August 25. The monthly meeting of the Eltham Borough Council was held to-night. Present: The Mayor (Mr. G. W. Tayier), Cr«. J. Carter, E. Thomas, G. Fitzgerald, L. Nairn. F. Cuff, J. L. Campbell,, and I. J. Bridger. The treasurer’s report showed receipts amounting to £3GIB 15s 5d and expenditure to £3151 2s 2d for July. The gasworks manager reported, that 81 tons of coal were used during the month, 543.600 feet of gas having been sold. The material for extra street lamps had arrived, and their erection would be completed in a week or two. The finance committee recommended that authority be given to the gasworks manager to have the burnt-out retort renewed: that the council reduce its application to the Bank of New Zealand for an overdraft limit of £6OOO in the district fund account to £4OOO. — Adopted. Applications for licenses to store dangerous goods were received from the New Zealand Meat Packing Co., Ltd., Eltham Dairy Co., Ltd., and Mr. A. E. Smalley.—Granted. The Eltham Hockey Association api plied for permission to charge gate 1 money on the occasion of a charity game at Taumata Park on August' 31. — Granted. The Eltham Boxinc Association applied for a further reduction in the rent charged for the hire of the town hall at its recent tournament.. The council decided to adhere to its previous decision. It was resolved to spend £3O on | young trees to be planted in the Soli diers’ Memorial Park. | In accordance with notice of motion Cr. Fitzgerald moved: “That seeing that ; the Town Hall is primarily for the I transaction and consideration of nuolic business, that addresses from candidates for Parliament are amongst the most I important business that can come before the citizens, the council directs the town hall committee to reserve the hall | if so applied for for any night preceding ' the election for a member of Parliament. even though the date be not specified at the date of application.” The motion lapsed for want of a seconder.
