Lord Cobham, a former president of the Marylebone Cricket Club, left £321,783. Yorkshire’s duel against Surrey at the Oval was everywhere accepted as the match of the season, practically deciding the championship. It attracted enormous interest, the crowds being as large as at the test matches. Though completely outclassing the southerners in batting, Yorkshire’s virtual victory only gave them two points for the first innings lead, slightly reducing their championship percentage. *■- Notts, through defeating Leicester, supplant Surrey for second place. The percentages are: .Yorkshire 71.85, Notts 70.40, Surrey 68.18, Kent 63.33. Yorkshire”s remaining matches are against Hampshire, Susses and Essex. MoLAREN’S TEAM. „ ADVERSE SYDNEY CRITICISM. Sydney, August 23. The Daily Telegraph says the personnel of McLaren’s team so far is not up to expectations. Had Hubert Ashton, Jardine and several others been available, the team would have presented a more favorable aspect. With the exception of a couple of players the combination appears mediocre, with no marked bowling talent. What there is will probably prove ineffective on the hard Australian wickets. Chapman and Calthorpe are the stars of the team. Gibson, If he accepts, will considerably strengthen the bowling. Of the rest little can be said, as their performances against Australia last year were not too lirilliant.
