EGMONT-WANGANUI HUNT. . TO-DAY’S RACES POSTPONED. The Egmont-Wanganui Hunt races, which were to have been held at Hawera to-day, have been postponed until Saturday, as the Hawera course is under water. NEW ZEALAND CUP. THE The Canterbury Jockey Club has received the following nominations for the New Zealand Cup, of 2500 sovs., two miles. —Omahu, Battle Knight, Festivity, Kilgour, Sunart, Toa Taua, Taipairu, Gasbag, Rapine, King’s Trumpeter, Penitent, Foo Chow, Angelo, Whipping Boy, Tame Fox, Trespass, Tenterfield. Bonetter, Admiral Codrington, Refrigeration, Eerie, Equitable, First Salute, Almoner, L’Amour, Prince Martian, Royal Box, Scion, Royal Star, Bonnie Winkle, Songbird, Lady Nassau, Insurrection, Many Kittle, Bonnie Heather, Verbosity, Marqueteur, Muranui, Rouen, Tekuri, Bonny Nurse, Corn Rigs, Roseday, Vespucci, Pluto, Cupidon, Tressayr, Urgency, Prosperity, Income, Linden, Winkle’s Mission, Martini. TURF TOPICS. (By "Moturoa.”) The Egmont-Wanganui Hunt Club’s meeting should attract a good crowd to Hawera on Saturday, in spite of the postponement. Taranaki sports will be there in good numbers, while many visitors from Foxton, Palmerston, Feilding, Bulls, Marton and other parts are expected. Special trains, both north and south, should add to the quota. Splendid acceptances have been received, and interesting racing sho.uld be served up at Hawera. The class of horses engaged is a distinct improvement for a Hunt Club meeting, the qualified hunters —including Simon, Raffle, The Baronet, Desire, Army Strvice, Kafour, Marshal Nell, etc.—being particularly strong. Racing will commence at 11.10 a.m. with the Maiden Steeples, run over two miles, and the hunters engaged include tried horses like Marshal Neil, The Baronet and Desire. Of the trio The Baronet hqs probably had most experience in the hunting-field, and as he has won over hurdles in hack company, he should have a good following. A good field of 15 is carded for the- Maiden Handicap, five furlongs, including Maniania, Miss Beauforte, Carabine, Lady Faa, and other good sprinters. On paper, Maniania a .id Miss Beauforte appear to have a slight "pull” on their opponents. Scratchings may reduce the field of 13 carded for the Hunters’ Hurdles, one mile and a half, but if Raffle, The Baronet and Desire go to the post they will carry big money. Raffle won the Hunters’ Hurdles at the Hawke’s Bay Hunt meeting, carrying 11.7 to the end of 12 furlongs In 2.53, and at the same gathering won the Hunters’ Flat Race, one mile, with 11.7, in 1.50. She is evidently a good sort of a mare.
Eleven figure in the Waverley Hack Handicap. seven furlongs, including Savoury, Complex. and Skylight, The two first named may be hardest to dispose of.
Tirau has a good horse’s weight in the Hunt Cup Steeples, run over two and a-half miles. Marshal Nell may be the best of the others.
Punters will have something to keep them busy when the. Flying Handicap (open), run over six furlongs, comes up for decision, the ten engaged being all speedy sprinters. On recent form Big Push should go well with 9.3, and Sunny Jim Is another that goes well in the mud.
Simon is set to give away a lot of avoirdupois in the Ladies’ Bracelet, a mile and a quarter flat handicap. Raffle, Army Service and Kafour can all go well, and the issue may lie between Raffle and Army Service.
The day’s racing will conclude with the Moumahaki Hack Handicap, six furlongs, in which Maniania and Miss Beauforte are sure to be well supported.
A number of Manawatu horses reached Ha'wera on Monday evening. H. King brought Adrienne and Elvaette; George Caddy, Satin, Circulate, and Bravata; and The Baronet was also brought un for the meeting. Probably these horses will remain in Taranaki for the North Taranaki Hunt meeting next week.
Splendid nominations were received on Friday evening for the Marton J.C. Spring meeting, the total reaching 250, as against 190 last year. Erie, Marqueteur, Muraahi. Mort Avis and Big Push are the Taranaki horses engaged in the Marton Handicap, while Inah, Marqueteur, Leithfleld and Big Push are in the Railway Handicap.
Income, Marqueteur and Stork have been nominated for the Avondale Cup. Income is also in the Plumpton Handicap, and Leithfield and Hlpo in the Flying Handicap.
The protest of the District Committee of the Dunedin Jockey Club against the action of the Licensing Committee of the New Zealand Racing Conference in ignoring its recommendations in respect to applications for licenses from trainers jockeys, is one that Will be supported by many other district committees. and the present anomalies and injustices should eventually be removed. There is hardly a racing district in which glaring injustices have not been done, and it requires prompt and concerted action to remedy the trouble.
France is looking to America to insure the future of her horse breeding and racing, according to an Interview with Baron Maurice de Rothschild, published in the Petit Parisien. The Baron predicts that wealthy Americans coming to reside in France will in future replace the former famous French breeders, and re-establish French racing in its old flourishing condition. French breeders of to-day are not willing to make the sarnie sacrifice as those of the past, and acquire bloodstock from England under the present unfavorable rate of exchange. The new breeders are not inspired by the same “regardless of cost” devotion to the sport. The contrary is the case in England, continues Baron Maurice, where, if some famous breeders have disappeared, they have been replaced by others equally ardent.
