THE TRADE PULSE.

STABLE PRICES WANTED. TARANAKI’S FORTUNATE POSITION. The trade outlook in Taranaki during the past year was briefly commented upon in the annual report of the Taranaki Employers’ Association, read at last night’s annual meeting. The year has been one in which definite progress has been made towards the stabilisation of prices (said the report). The trend of prices has been downward, and this general slump has brought loss to many employers. The curtailing of credit by the hanks has had the effect of reducing money supplies, and this has manifested itself in the slackness of trade, which even cut prices Lave been unable to ameliorate. This province in the latter half of the year passed through very severe times in respect to the prices for its primary products. The prices for dairy produce had hitherto remained good, and Taranaki experienced very little of the severe slump which was being felt in other districts. This was indeed fortunate for our province, and it is hoped that the low prices for our primary products will not continue. What is required is not high prices or low prices, but stable prices. With stable prices one can trade with some degree of certainty, and the banks would once more grant credits to induce a resumption of normal trading.
