A London cable says Sir William Allardyce has been appointed Governor of Newfoundland. He was formerly Governor of Tasmania.

An Auckland Press message reports the death of Mrs. Harriet Cossey, at the age of 101 years. She arrived in New Zealand 7'5 years ago with her husband, the late Wm. Cossey, and had been settled at Drury for over sixty years. Air. Norman T. Sinclair, M.A., assistant lecturer in Latin at the Auckland University, has been awarded a free return passage to Europe by the New Zealand University, and has also received an •overseas scholarship from Trinity College, Cambridge, where he intends to pursue his studies.

Reference to the death of Mr. Pryor, of the Federation office staff, was expressed in the annual report of the Taranaki Employers’ Association read at last nights’ annual meeting. “It is with great regret that we have to chronicle his death in February last,” said the report. He had borne his sufferings with/ great fortitude, and there is no doubt that his constant application to work on behalf of the employers had undermined his health. The services he rendered to us will stand as a monument to his memory.”

An apology for absence owing to illness was received from Mr. C. E. Baker at last night’s meeting of the Taranaki Employers’ Association. Messrs. F. S. Johns and P. E. Stainton referred to Mr. Baker’s long connection with the association, winch dated back to its inception, and the valuable services he had rendered. A vote of sympathy was passed with Mr. Baker, and a note will be sent to him expressing the wish that he may speedily be restored to good health.

Captain C. H. Kempson, White Star marine superintendent at Plymouth, England, has retired after a great many years of service afloat and ashore. His seafaring career came to an end after he had made 71 trips round the world by sail and steam, and because he had arrived at the age of retirement. He was one of the best known and most popular captains in the Shaw-Savill’s New Zealand service, and he was noted for the careful way he handled his ships. Captain Kempson was for about eight years commander of the Shaw, Savill and Albion liner Athenic, and reliquished His command to take up the position from which he has just retired.
