WAITARA.

WAITARA BOROUGH COUNCIL. (From Our Own Correspondent.) August 12. The monthly meeting of the Council was held on Wednesday last, his Worship the Mayor presiding. Mr. H. Hayhurst took his seat as councillor after making the usual declaration. The Salvation Army authorities thanked the council for permission to build in wood, and stated that plans would be submitted in due course. A contribution of 2/6 per week is to l>e made by the council towards nightwatchman’s remuneration. Mr. Reg. Baker’s offer for the use of portion of the cemetery reserve was accepted, on certain conditions being complied with. The Assistant-Under-Secretary of Public Works pointed out that the council were using bare wires for its electrical installa--tion, and advised the council to apply for a permit to do so. In his report to the council, the chief electrical engineer pointed out that defects as reported by him in 19£0 had not been attended to-. The time had now come when it might be necessary to impose a time-limit in which to make the council eomply with the conditions of the licence.

The matter was referred to the Electric Light Committee to deal with. In reply to a question from Cr. Johns, the Mayor stated that the council had not proceeded with its application to be joined up with the Taranaki Power Board. The opinion was generally expressed that Waitara’s best course was to link up with New Plymouth. A request from Mr. A. Tanner, to be supplied with pipes to fill in an open drain in Nelson Street was left in the hands of the Works Committee. Mr. A. E. Sarten and Mrs. Holloway drew the coqncil’s attention to a depression in the road near their residences, and asked for same to be filled in.—Left to Works Committee. Tome Kaingaru asked the council to make good the damage through his horse bolting through being frightened by the road-roller.—The council decided to reply that whilst regretting the incident they could not repair the damage done. The Legion of Frontiersmen reminded the council of certain promises made some time ago in connection with the old soldiers’ cemetery.—Left to Works Committee to report. The Mayor said he had heard a good deal of criticism re accepting the 6/6 yard tender against a lower one at 5/6. He had gone into the figures, and he found that the tenderer at 6/6, who carted per mo-tor-lorry, had carted 518 yards in seven, and a-half days, whereas with horses and drays it would have taken at least 13 days. This shortening of time had made the higher tender the cheaper proposition to the council to the extent of over £l3. The electrical engineer reported that No. 3 engine was now working satisfactorily, but the dynamo of No. 2 set was in very bad order. The rearrangement of the staff had been carried out and was working satisfactorily. The council went into committee to consider the wages question, and on resuming it vas resolved tbat the road foreman (Mr. W. Trim) receive a fixed salary of £260 per annum; Mr. L. Kendrick’s pay be 15s per day, plus overtime, and the casual men to receive 14s per day. It was resolved that Cr. Johns be the representative on the Fire Board in place of the late Mr. Rennie. GENERAL ITEMS. The novel balloon social held in the Clifton Hall on Wednesday evening last created a good deal of fun. There was a good attendance, and an enjoyable evening was spent. The prize-winners were Miss Telfar and Mr. R. St. George. Music was supplied by Mr. Fowler’s orchestra, and the M.C.’s were Messrs. E. Waters and D. Read. A meeting called for last Thursday evening, to arrange for a queen carnival, was well attended. Mr. E. C. Jones occupied the chair. Representatives from the Seaside Society, Tennis Club, Soldiers and Civilians’ Club favored the proposal. It was decided that each of the societies mentioned should nominate a “queen.” The following were elected a management committee: Mesdames D. Wilson, H. Spurdls, Muschamp, Messrs. S. G. Fraser, Alien. ■\ouig, Rowe. Bakewell, Gaw. Locke, and E. C. Jones, with Mr. H. Brabant as secretary and treasurer.
