INGLEWOOD.
FARMERS’ UNION. (From Our Own Correspondent.) August 12. The meeting of farmers* for the purpose of starting a local branch of the New Zealand Farmers’ Union here, adjourned from Saturday, was resumed on Thursday evening, when Mr. H. Trimble presided, and Messrs. F. Mills, president, and G. H. Buckeridge, provincial secretary, were again in attendance. Mr. Mills said every other line of industry was more or less organised, and it was incumbent on those who depended on the land for their living to do likewise, and as the Farmers’ Union was an existing organisation, he argued that it was the best policy of all farmers to join that body and not to attempt new organisations for a like purpose, as such departures only meant expense of time and money with weaker results. The New Zealand. Farmers’ Union was formed solely for the purpose of promoting the welfare of.the man on the land and conserving his interests, and it had done so in a marked degree in the past, was continuing to do so now, with prospects "of even more notable achievements in the future. He went over a good deal of the ground traversed at Saturday’s meeting, for the benefit of those who had not been there on that occasion, pointing out what had been done, and what it was hoped could be done, by a stronger combination, and after a very interesting address concluded by urging those present to use their best endeavors to enlist the active sympathises of their neighbors in the movement and form a real, live, strong centre in the Inglewood distinct. Mr. Buckfiridge followed the same lines as he used on Saturday, It was resolved that those present form themselves into a branch of the New Zealand Farmers’ Union, with Mr. H. Trimble as chairman and Mr. J. B. Simpson secretary pro tern. It was decided to prosecute a vigorous canvass of the district in the endeavor t) secure the strongest possible support. Votes of thanks to the visitors and to the chairman and Mr. Simpson were carried by acclamation.
