BIBLE IN SCHOOLS.
TEXT BOOK PROPOSAL. PROTESTANT CONFERENCE RESOLUTIONS. By Telegraph.—Press Association. Wellington, August 12. At a conference of representatives of different Protestant churches the following resolutions regarding the Bible in schools were carried, which the conference proposes as a united platform for Bible instruction in State schools:— (1) That a text-book be prepared by representatives of the Christian churches for approval by the Education Department, including (a) passages of Scripture, and (b) a selection of hymns. (2) That the text-book be used in State schools for. Scripture lessons to be given by the teachers, with simple explanations, for fifteen minutes daily, the lesson to be opened with the Lord’s Prayer. (3) That a conscience clause be allowed for teachers unwilling to give Scripture instruction and for parents not desiring children to attend such instruction. (4) In the event of any teacher availing himself of the conscience clause the school committee shall make suitable arrangements for conducting Scripture lessons. The resolutions were submitted to the Minister of Education and Mr., Caughley, director of education. The Minister promised to bring them before Cabinet.
