NOTES ON THE RACING. (By Wire—Special to News.) Christchurch, August 12. The Canterbury Jockey Club’s Grand National meeting was concluded at Riccarton to-day. Rain fell overnight, but it was fine again to-day, and the course was in good order. The totalisator investments showed a drop. Mystico was fancied for the Longbeach Hunters’ Hurdles, and his backers were never uneasy. He was never far from the front, and he won with ridiculous ease from Hereweare and Kauwhero. The winner was unluckily beaten on the first day. He is a good sort. Ready fell at the last hurdle. Nlcomar led all the way in the Aylesbury Steeplechase, and won comfortably from Staff Officer, with Whipcord a fair third. Whipcord was a disappointment, while Nicomar improved on his earlier form. There were 14 starters for the Heathcote Handicap, and they provided a great race. Economist, Counterstroke and Listening Post made the running, but retired below the distance, leaving Forest Gold in charge. Verbosity had bis measure a hundred yards from home, only in turn to be worried out of first place by Deucalion, who finished very fast. Haurangi was close up fourth. Passionless failed to stay. Rowan and who were in demand for the Styx Hurdles, joined the pacemaker Strayshot in the straight and had the finish to themselves. Rowan beat Kareao comfortably, and this brother of Master Strowah looks as If he would develop into a good one. Poanui and Explorer were better backed than Passenger for the Sydenham Hurdles. Passenger and Explorer made the early running from Fisher and’ Penury Rose. At the end of a mile Spook was in front, but Passenger soon headed him again. Over the last half-mile Passenger never looked like losing. Good Start finished with a great run to get second, two lengths in front of Penury Rose, with Spook and Paonui next. Passenger won the Trial Hurdles on the opening day, and he and Rowan must rank as a couple of very useful recruits from the hack hurdle ranks. Oakleigh, Red Cent and Waimai were fancied for the Lincoln Steeplechase. Red Cent and Golden Prince made the early running from Oamhu and Old Gold. A mile from home Waimai moved up, but lost his rider at the second of The Kennels double, after jumping to the front. Red Cent led over the last fence, but then retired, leaving Omahu just in front of Oakleigh, who had come from a long way back. Omahu drew out, but Oakleigh went after him again. Many people thought he had won, but the verdict was Omahu by half a head. Red Cent was six lengths away, with Old Gold next. L’Amour, in the Redcliffs Handicap, was giving away lumps of weight to some useful hacks. Horatius, one of the outsiders, was out in front early, and he had a big lead from Lord Leslie, Yankee Dan and Bluff at the entrance to the straight. L’Amour finished well, but Horatius beat him by over a length, with Yan’ Dan a length away third, and Bluff and r Huon next. Horatius is a fine track galloper, but rarely does his best in a race, though he once finished just out of a place in the Stewards’ Handicap. The Belwyn Handicap attracted 13 smart sprinters. V. .gle aud Will Oakland showed the way to ths distance, where Will Oakland collapsed and finished nearly last. In a desperate finish Wrangle lasted long enough to beat Chimera by a short head, with Civilform only a head away. Backsheesh and Irapuka were close up. Golden Bubble faded out at the finish, but Royal Mac was never in the picture. RACING IN AUSTRALIA. SATURDAY’S PRINCIPAL EVENTS. By Telegraph.—Press Assn. —Copyright. STRATFORD RACING CLUB. A meeting of the guarantors of the Stratford Racing Club was held on the 4th inst. The finances of the club were discussed and deemed thoroughly satisfactory and a resolution was passed authorising an amount to be spent on further improvements. As nominations for guarantors’ representatives on the committee of the Racing Club for the coming year did not exceed the number required, the following gentlemen were elected as committee men for the ensuing 12 months: Messrs. J. Fredrlc, D. J. Malone, J. W. McMillan, J. B. Richards, V. Smith, and C. B. Walsh. The election of president, vice-president, and one member of the committee will take place at the annual meeting, which is to be held on August 29.
The refusal of a trainer’s license to a wellknown Hawera trainer has caused a lot of comment, says an exchange, and in fact indignation, not only by many of the leading racing officials, but also by the leading citizens of the district, writes Malcenas. The trainer has spent many years of his life in the town, and without fear of contradiction one may say that for years past there has not been a more law-abiding and quieter trainer In the Dominion. The case Is well known to leading officials in Taranaki, and It appears strange that an act committed in youth, 20 years ago, should be revived, more especially after the individual has made full atonement. However, the case may serve a useful purpose, as I understand that a petition may be presented to Parliament by the member of the district, and this may be the means of removing certain anomalies which appear to exist under the new rule in the issuing of licenses.
