THE LOSS BEING REDUCED. EFFECTIVE ECONOMY. By Telegraph.—Press Association. Wellington, Last Night. The Minister of Railways made a statement in the House this afternoon on railways finance. During the fourweekly period ended June 24 the deficit on working amounted to £136,*668, or, deducting the profit ( £9010) on the Westport line (the only one showing a- profit), a net deficit of £157,658, which worked out at £2160 per day, compared with £4770 daily in August last year. Last year the expenditure 1 exceeded the revenue in the corresponding period by over £40,000. During trie period ended June the revenue exceeded the expenditure by £168,000. The Minister stressed the fact that economy in the management was being practised in an increasingly effective manner.
