EDUCATING MAORIS.
GREATER EFFORT REQUIRED. POSITION IN TARANAKI. (By Wire—Parliamentary Reporter.) Wellington, Lest Night. A request that the education authorities should make greater effort to indnee Maori parent® to send their children to school in certain parts of Taranaki was made to the Minister of Education to-day by Mr. 8. G. Smith, MJ®. Throughout Taranaki. Mr. Smith told the House, native children were attending European schools, and were often among the best pupils. Maori children were worth educating. In the Parihaka district he believed a large number of native children were’ not attending any school. With a little persuasion and organisation the parents of these children could be induced to send them at least to a primary school. He was afraid all that was passible had not been done to encourage native boys and • girls to continue their education beyond the primary stage.
