A London cable says a bulletin states Lord Northcliffe’s condition remains grave, but no worse. The, Legislative Council yesterday granted the Hon. E. W. Alison two weeks’ leave of absence on account of < illness. J His Honor Mr. Justice Chapman, aci} companied by his associate, Mr. K. C. ' Aekins, will leave Wellington on Monday next, for New Plymouth, to preside over the sitting of ‘the Supreme Court opening on Tuesday morning. The sudden death occurred at Pimlico of Tracey Page, ex-sergeant of the Canterbury Mounted Rifles (says a London cable). It was ascribed to meningitis from a bullet which had harmlessly rested in his skull, eluding the physician since he was shot in the head three years ago in New Zealand, when acting as musketry instructor. At the annual meeting of the National Park Board yesterday, the chairman (Mr. H. J. Lowe) referred to the loss of the late Mr. S. Percy Smith, who had been a member of the board for very many years. Probably it was due largely to his efforts that such a magnificent forest reservation had been set aside. Mr. T. C. List, in seconding a motion of condolence with his relatives, and who had taken the late gentleman’s on the board, said that Taranaki was indebted to Mr. Ifcrcy Smith and Mr. W. H. Skinner for the existence of the park, which would be more, and more valued and appreciated as time went on, as would the fine public spirit and farsightedness of the two men responsible for its reservation. Mr. T. B. Crump, of Eltham, spoke eulogistically of the late Mr. Smith’s services not only in respect of the Mt. lEgmont reserve 'but of many other works and services he had rendered to New Zealand. The motion w of condolence was carried in the customary manner. aL
