By Telegraph.—Press Assn.—Copyright. Received August 11, 7.55 p.m. Sydney, August 11. The report to be presented to the annual meeting of the Australian. Jockey Club shows that the stakes distributed in/ the past year, totalled £132,518, compared with £121,939 for the previous year. The amount passed through the totalisators was £1,280,000, from which the State revenue benefited to the extent of £113,547, and the Federal entertainment tax realised £13,647. TURF TOPICS. (By “Moturoa.”) Concluding day at Riccarton. Egmont-Wanganui Hunt weights are due on Monday. Coalition has run his last race, and will now enjoy a well-earned pension. When going well five furlongs from home in the Great Nwrthern Steeples, Waikaretu broke down badly. All Palmerston was on Passionless on Thursday. but the “price” was only a moderate one. Owing to A. Wormaid being injured, "Snowy” Morris fluked the ride on Gladful in the G.N. I Hurdles on Thursday. Ngata was made a lot. of use of in the big { Hurdles at Riccarton, and was very distressed i when pulled up. There is no truth in the statement that he broke down. The disappointing Tenterfield was again backed ahd beaten on Thursday, the winner turning up In the useful Foo Chow”, who smothered the crowd at the finish and returned a nice dividend. The public made no mistake in the Sumner Handicap when they_ sent L’Amour out a. hot favorite, the Kilbroney gelding scoring in the easiest possible style. L’Amour is a prad worth following. Nominations for the N.Z. Cup close on Friday next. Woi Jer how many Taranaki horses will be entered? Very few are worthy of the honor, at all events. The tracks at Riccarton were remarkably fast for this time of the year, as evidenced by Oakleigh’s 6.55 1-5 in the G.N. Steeples, and Bon Spec’s 1.41 in the Winter Cup. Further speedy performances followed on Thursday, when Foo Chow, with 10.13 up, ran ten furlongs in 2.7 1-5; Passionless, six; furlongs in 1.13; and L’Amour a mile in 1.41 1-5, with 10.11 up. Volo’s brace of failures at Riccarton make it appear that, Mr. A. E. Tatley (the owner of Glen Canny, Bonny Canny, etc.) made a doubtful bargain when he bought the Hawera horse for 750 gns. From all accounts Master Strowan was unlucky to get "killed in action” in the G.N. Steeples. At one part of the race he was about last, but had run up to within striking distance of the leaders when Kohu fell and brought him down. Instead of a broken neck. Master Strowan’s share should have been the 420 sovs. attached to second honors—at the very least. Kohu is the most unfortunate chaser on deck at present. In race after race he topples over in the final stages, just when his backers are congratulating themselves on the prospects of collecting a decent dividend. Surely, Kohu’s luck will change soon 1 ; Rowan looked the best of good things for the Spreydon Hurdles on Thursday, and he had things made easy for him by Nautical running off. So far the Awapuni jumpers. Passenger and Rowan, have done well at the meeting, and Passionless has also brought ’oof to the pockets of Palmerston punters. Gladful raced right through last season for only one win, the G.N. Hurdles, and he scored again on Thursday with exactly the same weight, 11.2. It could not be said that Mr. Henrys let the old horse in lightly, but simply goes to show a prad’s fancy for a particular course, and the difference between hurdle races pt a mile and three-quarters and two miles when compared with races running to two miles and a-half. Gladful’s stron'g point is staying, and on both occasions he won through his ability to keep going “till the cows came home!”
Ngata finished up favorite in the G.N. Hurdles, with Paonui, Explorer, Gladful and Whipcord also well backed. Falstaff showed the way over the first, fence, but ran off the course immediately afterwards. Bellrock and Ngata led past the stands, followed by Ore Ore, Explorer and Penury Rose,* with Gladful well back. Ngata took the lead going along the back, and Bellrock retired, the ogiers remaining in unchanged order. Ngata lost ground at the second fence from home, but led over the last obstacle from Ore Ore, Explorer, Paonui and Gladful. The weight told on Ngata. in the run home, and Gladful, who finished at a great pace, scored nicely from Ore Ore, who was just in front of Ngata and Paonui, with Explorer and Penury Rose next. Alteration was not sighted on the journey. The Victoria Amateur Turf Club’s meeting open,s at Caulfield to-day, when the Australian Hurdle Race, of 2000 sovs., run over nearly miles, will provide the principal excitement. Latest advices state that Fiscom is a pronounceil favorite, but many good judges give Pistolier a good chance. The greatest weight ever won with was 12.5, under whicty Colonel Shilinski was successful, and Fiscom, who has 12.7 to-day, is asked a big auestiou. Pistolier ran second in the race last year, and third in 1918, so he should know the course .well enough. What a race it would be for an. out-and-out stayer like Gladful I In Marton on Thursday they talked of nothing but Ngata for the G.N. Hurdles, and there were many puzzled punters when word came through that the local champion was neither first nor second. What they said when they picked up Friday morning’s paper and read that their own “Snowy” Morris had ridden the winner. Gladful, cun only be iwigiaed* "
