DISPUTE OVER WAGES. By Telegraph.—Press Association. Wellington, Last Night. It was the practice to pay the Tu j tanekai’s seamen extra wages for special work, and this was extended to other members o-f the crew, but latterly it was withdrawn. In consequence the steamer's firemen to-day refused to sign on when new articles, were being taken out. BURGLARY IN CHRISTCHURCH. Christchurch, August 8. The premises of the Christchurch Working Men’s Club were burglariously entered last night and the safe broKOn open. Close on £lOO was taken. The condition of the club bar showed that the burglars helped themselves generously to cigarettes and liquid refreshments.
COST OF BUILDING SCHOOLS. Wellington, August 8. Speaking at the opening of a new infant school, the Hon. C. J. Parr commented on the increase in the cost of school buildings, which was double what it was in 1914. He did not know why it cost more in the North Island than in the South, but there was a difference of 25 to 30 per cent. He pointed out that other departments could economise in works, but the Education Department' •could not. because it had to provide for an annual increase of 7000 children, which involved £70,000 to £BO,OOO. Even in these hard times it was a mistake to cut down the education vote, and although a small cut had to be made in salaries recently, he would be sorry to see any more. It was not right to effect large economies at the expense of the teaching staff, and he was not going to.
