The chairman (Mr. Lore®) of die Eastern Railroad presidents’ conference declared President Harding’s proposal that the men should return to work and that the Railway Labor Board should decide seniority means the complete surrender of the railway executive’s position. Mr. Jewell states President Harding’s latest settlement proposal constitutes a moat uncalled-for attempt to help the railroads to break the strike, and that the railway shop federations will not accept it. ATTEMPT TO WRECK TRAIN. STRIKERS OFFER A REWARD. New York, August 7. The railway strikers in New York have offered a hundred dollars reward for information leading to the identification of the men who attempted to wreck the service. A message from Joliet. Illinois, states that two were killed and 30 seriously wounded in riots in the railway shops when strikers attacked strike-breakers. Washington. August 7. President Harding, after a conference with the striking railway leaders, issued a letter pointing out that the Seniority issue was the only obstacle to a settlement. He called on the strikers to return and the executives to assign them work. Both sides should refer the seniority question to the Railway Labor Board.
