PROVISION AGAINST DUMPING. By Telegraph.—Press Assn —Copyright. Melbourne, August 4. In the House of Representatives Mr. Rodgers gave notice to introduce a Bill to amend the Industries Preservation Act and to provide more effective measures for dealing with dumping, in view of the extraordinary depreciation of the value of the mark. Mr. Rodgers explained that the exchange value of the mark on July 31 was 3015 to £l. The Act provided for depreciation to 240 marks to the pound. FIRES IN CANE FIELDS. Brisbane, August 4: Sixteen fires, probably caused by incendiarism, are reported from the sugarcane fields at Cairns. SAILING OF THE ECHUCA. Melbourne. August 4. The crew of the Echuca were released on their own recognisance. They subsequently manned the vessel, which sailed for Singapore. CAUSING UNREST Sydney, August 3. Henry Edward Boots, editor of the newspaper Worker, was fined £25 for inciting members of the Australian Workers’ Union to refuse to accept employment under the terms of an award. A case against George Buckland, secretary of the central branch of the Australian Workers’ Union on a similar charge, was adjourned. THE FORTY-EIGHT HOURS BILL. Sydney, Aug. 3. In the Assembly, the Government Bill, providing for restoration of the -18-hour , week, is having a slow passage, the Laborites putting up a strong fight in support of existing conditions. COMMUNITY SINGING. Sydney, August 4. There was a packed meeting at the Town Hal! on the occasion of the anniversary of the outbreak of the war, and it demonstrated the appeal that community singing has made to the Sydney public. The great crowd, accompanied by the grand organ., sang patriotic songs with sincerity, auguring well for the future of community ginging here. NEWCASTLE TROUBLE. Sydney, August 5. The recent offer of the Australian Workers’ Union to the Broken Hill Proprietary Company and Ryelands’ wire-netting works for the resumption of operations at Newcastle on reduced wages has been officially rejected by the Labor Council.
