DISTRICT NEWS.

MOKAU—AWAKINO. (From Our Own Correspondent.) The o.v. Mahoe is laid,up, waiting for a new engine. Work on the Awaftino Valley Road is going on apace, and the steam navvy is busy. There are three gangs of men at work and metalling will commence at the Awakino end very shortly. Arrangements are well ahead for placing the proposed stone crusher at the ferry, but, first of all, a road has to be prepared to the pit, which is situated some 5 or 6 miles up the Mokau river. This is required for the conveyance of the stone to the crusher. The stone will be conveyed by the snagging punt belonging to the Mokau Harbor Board. Mr. Fred. Bishop is acting as engineer in Mr. Townley’s place, while the latter is on holiday leave. Mr. Brent, of Plopio, Presbyterian minister, held service in Mokau and Awakino on Sunday, July 29. There was a good congregation, and Mr. Brent’s visit was much appreciated. Mr. McGregor, of Awakino, acted as organist during the service. The proposed football match, Awakino v. Tongaporutu, at Tongaporutu will not be played on Saturday next as a team cannot be got together. Mr. Norman Clifton, of Mokau, went goat hunting last week end, and secured some halfdozen splendid skins. He also captured alive two little kids, and naturally "kids” himself now as being some goat hunter. Mr. W. Kelly, of "Ballycraggan,” is in New Plymouth and will bring home Mrs. Kelly and their little daughter.

Messrs. R. Parr and Arnold Foster generously gave a half day to cutting and casting the necessary greenery which was used for the deCoration of the Awakino Hall on the occasion of the grand ball, which was held last month. The decorations were quite a feature of the function. Mr. Skelton, of Awakino, helped materially in the decorating, and these three gentlemen certainly deserve the thanks accorded them. Mrs. F. Wolfe, of Awakino, is on a visit to Taranaki. Mr. Niki Lake, with his wife and infant son, are visiting Mr. Lake’s parents, Mr. and Mrs. Geo. Lake, of Awakino. Mr. J. Northern, of Awakino, returned from town last week. Several small shoals of whitebait have been seen of late making up the Mokau river, but so far none have been netted. KAI MATA. (From Our Own Correspondent.) The R.S. ball, to be held in the Kasmata Hall on August 9, promises to be a great success, and, given a fine night, there *s no reason why it should not be the best function seen here this season. Mrs. Bianchi’s orchestra has been engaged to play. Things usually go well at Kaimata when the “Digs." get their heads together. Mrs. Roy Croft, of Kaimata, was taken io hospital very ill a few days ago, also Mr. and Mrs. Taylor’s little girl. We in Kaimata wish both patients a speedy recovery. The factory has been running ail the winter and a good many farmers alreauy have fresh cows in, so the milk supply should be on the increase.
