WHICH POCKET?
PRIME MINISTER AND MAIN ROADS. ■Repying to the farmers’ deputation on Saturday, the Prime Minister said, with regard to their advocacy of the Highways Bill, that there was a good deal of opposition to it, especially from those districts that had made their roads at their own expense. Mr. J. Garten (Auckland): Were they made at their expense, or did the Consolidated Revenue have something to say? Mr. Massey: You don’t get money for roads from the Consolidated Revenue Fund. They may have been made from loans. Mr. Garten: One is the right and the other left pocket. The Prime Minister: Yes; there is a right and left pocket, but there is a difference to the finances of the country from which pocket you take the money. That is too big a subject to go into here. Mr. Massey added that a county council had a tremendous influence with members of Parliament, in cases like this. However, he hoped that the legislation to be introduced would be satisfactory. Meantime, the Government were employing on a number of main highways men that had been out of ■work. He referred especially to the main roads at Paekakariki, at Rangiriri, in the Auckland district, and in the Manawatu district.
