RIGHTS OF MAORIS.
SOUTH ISLAND CLAIM. , 4, By Telegraph.—Press Association. Christchurch; Last Night. The Tuahiwi hui to-day was attended by the Hon. J. G. Coates (Native Minister) and a number of members of both Houses. Hone Taare Tekao and Taranaki Te Ua brought under the notice of the Minister the commissioner’s report recommending that £354,000 be paid to the Maoris as compensation for land taken, and they asked him to bring the matter under the notice of the Government so that finality might be reached. Mr. Coates, in reply, said the commissioner’s report had. not been forgotten. At the present time it w?|j quite impossible for the Government to hand over £354,000, but it was quite possible for the amount to be paid in instalments spread over a number of years. Ratana will be present to-morrow.
