LAND AND INCOME TAX.
I FURNISHING RETURNS. DEFAULTERS FINED. (From Our Own Correspondent.) Stratford, August 2. Two unusual cases, of interest to payers of land and income tax, and those required to furnish returns for the assessment of taxes, came before Mr. A. M. Mowlem, S.M., at the Stratford Court to-day. J. H. Goldup was charged with failing to send in land and income tax* returns. Mr. A. A. Bennett (instructed by Mr. C. H. Weston) appeared on behalf of the Commissioner of Taxes, and Mr. A. Coleman appeared for the defence. For the defence Mr. Coleman said that Goldup was under the honest impression that as he was not liable for taxation if he had sent in returns he was under no obligation to ©end in returns. Alfred Barlow pleaded guilty to a. similar charge and appeared on his own behalf. The circumstances were similar to those in Goldup’s caseThe magistrate said that the fact that defendants were not liable for taxation did not relieve them of the obligation to furnish returns to enable the Commissioner to say whether or not, they were liable. Each defendant was fined £2 and costs 21s.
