Metropolitan, with a strong southerly wind at their backs, failed to check the aggressive movements of the Blacks’ forwards in the first half, but the visitors incurred a number of penalties for off-side playMingay opened the local©’ attack with a try shortly after the commencement, Richardson replying with a try after a very fine run from half-way. Nicholls converted. O’Brien terminated a forward rush with a try in the corner, and the spell ended: New Zealand 8, Metropolitan 3. , The second half was open and £ast, but devoid of pep and vim. The Blacks took charge for the first twenty minutes, and after that a number of brilliant passing rushes by the local backs called forth all the defensive ability of the visitors. Richardson again distinguished himself in two really brilliant individual efforts, toeing the ball from half-way and making three tries for the game. Dawson responded to Richard's first try in this spell with a diagonal sprint, which Bellis magnificently terminated at the corner flag by a fine tackle. Dawson again ran through the Blacks, but was grassed by Bell with three supports unmarked- Bell then took the ball from a short punt by Shute, and running round the opposition backs, gave the “dummy” to Walker and scored, the crowd expressing their merriment at the full-back scoring. Nicholls converted, making the scores 18 to 3. Baddeley secured a try against feeble attempts at tackling, but no goal resulted. Marrott converted a Black offensive move into a defensive, and crossed the line after a sprint of fully fifty yards. The try was not converted.
