REVIVING INDUSTRY.
LOWER CHARGES NECESSARY. By Telegraph.—Press Assn.—Copyright. Received Aug. 2, 10.40 p.m. Sydney, August 2. Giving evidence before the Industrial Court, on an application by the Broken Hill Company’s steel works at Newcastle for a variation of the award, a representative of the company said he thought that if they could secure a reduction in wages and the price of coal and a forty-eight hours’ working week they would be able to re-open the works. It would take two months to get the works into full going order again. Re-opening would result in the re-employment of four thousand men. A large amount of raonej was involved in the works, and unless they re-started the parties interested, would stand to lose between £7,000,000 and £8,000,000.
