CHEAPER SUGAR.

ABOUT A PENNY A POUND, LOWER PRICE NEXT MONTH. TRADERS CUTTING PRICES. By Telegraph.—Press Association. Wellington, Last Night. The Minister of Industries and Commerce (the Hon. E. P. Lee) stated in the House this afternoon that it is the intention of the Government to reduce the retail price of sugar as from September 7 next, on which date it is estimated that the sugar the subject of the supplementary contract recently entered into will ibe placed on the market. Details as to the price have not yet been determined, but it is anticipated that the reduction on the present maximum price of 4fd will be in the vicinity of |d to Id per lb.

A recent announcement was made in Australia of the intention of the Commonwealth Government to reduca the retail price to 5d per lb as from November 1. It -will therefore be seen that the New Zealand consumer is still in a relatively fortunate position in regard to the sugar supply, notwithstanding the maximum price allowed to be charged, namely 4fd a. lb. Traders have been cutting the price and sugar has been sold retail at prices ranging from 4d to 4£d a lb. If when the new price comes in this practice continues there is a possibility of the consumers obtaining sugar at 3Ad a lb. '
