BOROUGH AFFAIRS.
NEW PLYMOUTH COUNCIL. GENERAL MATTERS DEALT WITH. The New Plymouth Borough Council met last night. The Mayor (Mr. F. (E. Wilson) presided. Crs. J. Kibby, T. N. Blackball, E. Dingle, R. A. Large, R. L. Parkin and V Griffiths were also present. Plans for a further sub-division of portion of Mr. Greig’s property at the corner of Belt Road and Devon Street were submitted for approval.—lt was decided to ask Mr. Greig to formally agree to. dedicate sufficient land to make the new road according to the plan submitted. Messrs. Govett, Quilliam and Hutchen forwarded transfer of land required for full width of street in Mr. Greig’s subdivision, and £325 in connection with the water main. Approval was deferred pending further inspection by the borough engineer. Dr. M. Campbell wrote complaining of delay in forming the road in Waiwaka Terrace.—lt was decided he be informed that the contractors gave up the work, but that the council will commence it by day labor without further delay.
The Fitzroy Ratepayers’ Association asked that trees opposite Fitzroy store be cut back or removed as they obstruct the view and make traffic at the corner dangerous. They also asked that the footpath on the eastern side of Saukville Street be formed.—To be referred to the borough engineer for report. The Public Trust Office, Wellington, asked that the footpath in King Street outside the Public Trustee’s office be • formed and asphalted. —It was decided ito carry out the work if the Public. Trustee paid half the cost, which the engineer estimated at £23. The borough engineer reported that the water mains in portions of Gilbert and Gover Streets were corroded, preventing a full fire service being afforded. He suggested larger pipes being laid.— The engineer was authorisd to carry out the work when pipes came to hand.
The secretary of the New Plymouth Association Football Club (Mr. L. Dawson) asked that the council waive its charge of 10s for traffic control in connection with the Taranaki-Australia match.—lt was decided to inform Mr. Dawson that as he arranged with the borough inspector to pay the fee the council expected him to do so. A plan was submitted of a proposed new street at Moturoa to be constructed through Mr. Gilmour’s subdivision. — Subject to the road being metalled the full width at the end before the turning and tapered off 20 feet back, the | plan will he approved. Messrs. Redpath and 'Sons. Ltd., offered to roof the tramways shelter at the railway station, in tiles for £3l, or with slates for £4O. If. however, they were permitted to advertise on the roof and in front of the seat? the price for roofing would be .£2o.—The offer was held over for further report by the tramways engineer.
