The easing in the potatoes market recorded last week is more pronounced' Auckland is not showing much buying activity, relying apparently on the heavier consignments going forward to keep up supplies. This absence of orders is reflected by weakening amongst local holders, and there have been quittings at quite 10s per ton less than the values of a week ago. The Glaucus, leaving on Thursday, and the Wingatui within a day or two are taking from southern ports from 12,000 to 13,000 sacks (a two weeks’ supply) fo r the northern centre. Consignments have been so heavy this year that Auckland merchants, who in the past have traded heavily in forward purchases, have done little of this business this) season. Prices may be quoted at £4 15s to £4 17s Gd for delivery this month. The present position is unsteady. There is no alteration in other lines of produce. Ryegrass and cowgrass are firm at late quotations. Chaff has met with a little inquiry and is worth, according to station, £2 17s 6d to £3 a ton. Farmers are not offering under the latter figure. Oats are exceedingly dull. The retention of the Australian duty is disappointing to merchants. It is alleged, however, that a much greater quantity of oats has gone into consumption on the farm than anticipated. AUCKLAND SHARE MARKET. Auckland, Last Night. Sales.—Soldiers’ Inscribed Stock, £9B 12s 6d; Bank of New Zealand, 52s 9d; Hikurang* Coal, preference, 10s 3d; Auckland Trams, 17s Gd; Wilson's Cement, 18s 9d; Waihi, 292 3d.
