DISTRICT NEWS.

OAKURA. (From Our Own Correspondent.) The last of a series of six euchre parties was held in the hall on Thursday, 27th inst., and as usual was well patronised. Oh this occasion the prizes both went to outsiders, Mr. W. Honeyfleld, of Tataraimaka, winning the gentlemen’s, and Miss Freer, a visitor from Tarikl, the ladies’. At the conclusion of the party, Mr. G. 11. Bell (chairman) presented the prizes, and Mr. Honeyfield very kindly returned his as a donation towards the hall fund. This year it. was decided to give a points prize each to the lady and gentleman who gained the.second highest total. The new plan was adopted in order to encourage those who -hadnot qualified for a prize on any individual night during the season. Miss Gwen Stobie ana Mr. A. Julian, being the lucky ones, were each awarded £l. All kinds of visitors come to see the sehool-t.-achers during the year, but it is not very olten they are paid a call by a goat. Such, I understand, was the experience of the teacher and children of Koru School one day last week. For a time everyone was obliged to find cover until the very unwelcome visitor was ejected. The two-headed calf, which last week was stated as belonging to Mr. Fred Jury, Oakura, really belonged to Mr. W. Honeyfleld, of Tatars Unaka. We have to congratulate Mr. ana Mrs. Jury instead on the birth of a daughter. Our congratulations are also extended to Mr. Tom Smart, who has been elected a vice-pre-sident of the New Plymouth Band for the ensuing year. For a number of years Mr. Smart acted as bandmaster of the Hawera Band. A meeting of the boll committee was held on Wednesday evening to consider what Should he done after the euchre parties came to an end. After some discussion it was decided to hold a long night dance in about a fortnight’s time. Details will be published in due course. ; This week two families are severing their connection with the Oakura district. Mr. Marsh h; taking up l>is residence at Hurford Road, and Mi’. Percy Wood at Omata. Both are widely known and will be missed. PUNGARKHU.

(From Our Own Correspondent.) Changes in Pungarehu are becoming very frequent. Quite a number of residents have left and others are leaving shortly. Mr and Mrs. Mallet and family, who for the past two years have been managing Mr. Rutherford’s farm on the lower Parihaka Road, have gone to Patea. and a large family are taking their place here. Mr. Busing, the second assistant at the Cape Egmont Dairy Company’s cheese factory, has been chosen as manager for a factory near Opunake, and has already commenced his new work. Mrs. Busing, for the latter part of last season, undertook the work of catering for tlie factory employees, and has gone , with her husband and family, and Mrs. Kirk has undertaken to supply meals for the employees and the carpenters who arc still engaged on building the curing room at the factory. The factory still continues to run every dav for the big suppliers. A. valedictory social in honor of Mr. and Mrs. McKenna was held in the hall on Tuesday evening, the 25th. Favored with beautiful weather there was a very representative gathering of friends and wellwlshers, the organising being in the hands of Mr. T. Barrett. The usual excellent music was suppiled by Parker’s orchestra, and the dance, which was kept up to a late hour, was thoroughly enjoyed by all present. Mr. Mathews, as doorkeeper, carried out. his duties faithfully, while Messrs. A. Gilhooly and T. Barrett acted as M.C.'s in thier usual efficient style. The supper, which was in the hands of the ladies, left nothing to he desire’d, ’ and" after this had been done full justice to Mr.* P. Brophy, in a happy speech, asked Mr. McKenna to accept, on behalf of all present, a case of razors, while Mrs. McKenna was presented with a cheque. Mr. McKenna suitably replied. General regret is felt at losing Mr. and Mrs. McKenna, who have always been very active and useful members of this community since Mr. McKenna was appointed as manager. of the Co.op. store. I understand it is the intention of Mr. and Mrs. McKenna to reside in New. Plymouth for a few months. Quite a noticeable difference is manifest in the price of goods to-day and the prices prevailing twelve months ago. If only the prices of the necessaries of life fall a little lower with a reduction in house rent and the rate of interest, on mortgages, etc., the working man and small farmer would have little to complain of. Miss Morecraft spent the week end with friends in Hawera. Mrs. Joseph, of New Plymouth, is spending a short holiday in Pungarehu. Miss Ada Corbett, who has been visiting friends at Fitzroy. has returned home. Mrs. Mathews is expected to shortly complete her engagement at Fitzroy and return home. Beautiful weather has prevailed here for the past fortnight, being more like the balmy days of spring than the middle of winter, and stock is wintering exceptionally well. The Cape EgmwH Co-op. store’s new manager commenced his new duties on YVednesday, and his family will shortly move into their n’cw home.
