RUSSIAN FAMINE RELIEF.
“NO WISH TO DRY UP THE SPRINGS.” (From Our Parliamentary Reporter.) Wellington. July 26. A cabled statement that the worst of the Russian famine was over was quoted in the House yesterday by Mr. J. A. Nash (Palmerston), who in effect asked the Minister of Internal Affairs for a declaration of the attitude of the Government towards the famine collections in view of the information contained in the cablegram. His reason for asking, he explained, was that so much money was needed for unemployment relief in this country. The Minister (Hon. W. D. Stewart) said that he had no desire to do anything which would dry up the springs of private charity. He would see if it was possible to check the information the member had quoted. If it was, he would state the position to the House. The Government had not seen its way to subsidise the funds remitted for Russian relief, as within the country there were very urgent claims upon the public funds.
