A DIVORCE SEQUEL.
FARMER FORCED TO FILE. DAMAGES A BIG ITEM. By Telegraph.—Press Association.* Wellington, July 29. At a meeting of the creditors of G. V. Shannon, ex-farmer at Mosstown, near Wanganui, the bankrupt said that, as the result of an action in a divorce case, Mr. M. N. Sarcich, laborer, of Plimmerton, obtained judgment against him for £l5OO, with £BB costs. He was obliged to sell and, after paying his mortgage and expenses, only received £127. Apart from Sarcich he owed about £66. Bankrupt was questioned as to hie reversionary expectations from an estate left to his mother and said he had sold his interest in a half share of £l5OO to her for £lOO. He was insolvent at the time. Sarcich's counsel alleged that bankrupt went to Auckland with the man’s wife, and when the divorce action went against him, got rid of everything. The assignee pointed out that the transactions took place before the judgment, but counsel insisted it was all part of the scheme whereby Shannon would have nothing when he went to court. The Shannon estate was a very wealthy
Counsel on the other side said the creditors need not look for anything from it. It was worth about £60,000, but bankrupt’s branch of the family had had its share and the rest of them would, do nothing more for him. Shannon’s statement showed that £lO in cash was still available, and the assignee demanded it. From it Shannon produced £2 and said £5 was in Wanganui, but would not be there when he got back. The proceedings were then adjourned.
