It was shown that accused, a tobacconist and hairdresser, had taken up telephone betting when his legitimate business fell off. CHARGE OF CHILD MURDER. Dunedin, July 28. A married couple, Stuart Harland and Heather Belle Harland, charged with the murder of their infant child, were further remanded till Wednesday. A SERIOUS CHARGE. Carterton, July 27. A young Percy Crabb, alias Les. Johnson, alias Percy Aderton, was arrested at Greytown last night and charged with attempted carnal knowledge of a little girl of 9s. He appeared before Mr. D. P. Loasby, J.P., this morning, and was remanded for seven days. It was alleged that he accosted three little girls who were returning -from school. Two escaped and informed a farmer named Kempton, who went to the rescue, knocked Crabb down, and ■'nt on him till another man, Garrrty, arrived. They bundled accused into a motor car and took him to the ’'olice station, where he was locked up. STOREMEN’S DISPUTE, Wellington, July 27_. The work of. storemen in the employ of .wholesale merchants, especially those handling wool and produce in bulk, was considered in the Conciliation Council to-day. Both parties put in claims and the award sought was a Dominion one. As agreement could only be reached on minor points the whole dispute was referred to the Arbitration Court. PLUNKET SOCIETY’S GRANT. Wellington, July 2. Delegates of the Plunket Society asked the Premier and Mr. Parr to-day for an assurance that ample financial provision would be made for carrying on the work this year. Mr. Massey said he could not promise to grant £14,000 or £15,000 but would try to manage an equal amount to the last vear’s vote ( £11,373).
