THE BAND.

(To the Editor.)

Sir, —I read with interest your report of the annual meeting of the 4th Battalion Wellington Regiment Band. It was a pleasure to note the band had another very successful year, and that the future success of the band appears to be assured. I also noted the complimentary references made to all the officials, including the bandmaster and the men, but although I read the report over twice I failed to see any such eulogistic remarks applied to the man whom in my humble estimation has been mainly responsible in bringing the band up to its present standard of efficiency, viz., the drum major. The bandmaster and his assistant are both paid (members, but the drum major is expected to carry out his somewhat arduous duties and also waste his time, which he could put to more profitable use, just for the mere honor and glory of marching in front. Yes, Sir, every one in the band received a hearty vote of .thanks, but apparently even this much was tpo big a price to pay for the drum major’s services. In my opinion the very least they could have done, and .1 can assure you they have done very little, was to appreciate his services at the annual meeting, if only by giving him a hearty vote of thanks. It would have cost them nothing.—l am, etc., BUGLER.
