Owing to the rapid increase in the number of rabbits in various parts of the country a Rabbits Bill, enabling the local authorities in certain cases to undertake their destruction, was read a first time in the House of Commons. DIVORCE RECORDS. London. July 24. During the past week Lord Buckmaster and Judges Salter an-d Horridge made a record in clearing off the arrears of 500 undefended divorce cases. Lord Buckmaster dealt with 212 in a week, touching an average of three minutes per suit. The other two judges cleared the lists almost as quickly. Sir Arthur Salter to-day dealt with 15 before lunch. TIBET FEELS THE PINCH. Delhi, July 24. Tibet is suffering acute economic distress owing to the unfavorable exchange, high cost of living and high cattle mortality. The middle class has oeen reduced to a state of poverty, and the Government is equally afflicted, the expenditure exceeding the income. It has imposed heavy , fresh taxation bn all adults, with a poll-tax of two tankas, worth six annas, and on animal owners one tanka for every animal possessed. Sheep owners will pay a heavy tax ih a lump sum for their flocks. The Postmaster General of Bengal is I visiting Tibet to supervise the erection ■ of telegraph lines from Gyantse to I Lhassa. a strange innovation in a little- -| known country, hut it will probably have far-reaching consequences. MILLIONAIRE GOES BANKRUPT. New York. July A sensation was caused in Wall Street through the failure of Allen Ryan and Son. Mr. T. F. Ryan is a multi-millionaire. His liabilities are stated to bp 3'2 million dollars and his assets less than a million. ECHO OF WILSON MURDER. London. July 24. Mrs. Edie, clerk in the Pensions Department. who was arrested durinff the raid following the murder of Sir Henry Wilson, on a charge of having incendiary bombs in her possession, was sentenced to two years’ imprisonment. Mr. Justice Sharman mentioned that the bombs found in her possession contained thermite, which caused practically inextinguishable fires. SUN YAT SEN DEFEATED. Canton, July 24. The fight around Shiuchow, 40 miles north of Canton, resulted in the defeat of Sun Yat Sen’s forces by Chiung Ming, the former retiring 20 miles north. AUSTRALIAN COAL FOR AMERICA. Sa.n Francisco, July 24. It is learned that twenty vessels have been chartered to bring coal from Australia, one being the Hollywood, chartered in Rolph Hind’s interests. It is announced that the steamer West Islip. from Newcastle (N.S.W.) will bring 6000 tons.
