ELTHAM.

THE PUBLIC LIBRARY. (From Our Own Correspondent.) July 25. The annual meeting of subscribers to the Eltham Public Library was held last night, Mr. I. J. Bridger presiding over a fair attendance. Jn moving the adoption of the annual report and balance-sheet the chairman said it was very satisfactory to note that the membership was at present the highest in the history of the re-established library. The finances were also very sound. During the first year of its re-establishment the institution had received over £5O in donations, besides assistance. Even without this assistance they had carried on successfully and now had a credit balance of £25. When the library was re-opened it contained 1000 volumes, and it now had over 1800. It was regrettable that while the committee was doing all it could to provide the public with reading matter there were some people who continually stole both magazines and newspapers. The report and balance-sheet were adopted. From nine nominations for the committee the following were elected: Mesdames O. J. Hawken. D. Syme, Rev. E. J. Orange, Messrs. F. R. Pepperell, J. H. Sheat and R. Gibbings. It was decided to approach the Borough Council with the object of having the library subsidy increased -for the coming year. The chairman reported that a donation of £5 4s 3d had been received from the Amateur Theatrical Society, which had wound up its affairs. A vote of thanks was accorded the society. The secretary was voted an honorarium of two guineas. Votes of tharrtts were accorded the Borough Council, the outgoing committee. and the chairman. At a later meeting of che committee the date of the monthly meeting was fixed for the second Monday of each month. The election of a chairman, secretary and selection committee was left until the next meeting. The meeting of the Eltbam Chamber of Commerce, called' for Monday night, lapsed for want of a quorum.
