DAILY NEWS AGENCY. Advertisements and items of news f«r publication in the Taranaki Daily News should be left at the office of our local representatative. Mr. W. H. Humphrey. Broadway, Stratford. Orders for papers may also be left with him. THE TOWN BRIDGE. COST TO BE INCREASED. July 25. The town clerk has received the following letter from Mr. T. M. Ball, resident engineer, Public Works Department, with reference to the new town bridge:—“l have to advise you that owing to unforseen defects in the abutments of the present bridge which were to have been incorporated in the new structure, it is now considered necessary to demolish them and substitute new work. This will naturally increase the cost of the bridge by about £2OOO, and I would be pleased to have your council’s assurance that they approve of the alteration and that they will be able to arrange the necessary financial provision on the basis already agreed upon. I may say that the above defects did not become apparent until considerable excavation work had been done, and there was no reason to suspect that the old work was not carried out faithfully as is the general practice in these works.” The letter has been replied to as follows: “The council is disagreeably surprised to learn that the existing piers in the Patea bridge have now been condemned by your department’s engineers, involving an extra cost of over £2OOO. The council undertook to find threequarters of the cost of the original contract, and is emphatic in its opinion that as the fault lies with your department’s engineers the Government should find the whole of the extra cost. Had the council been correctly advised in the first instance, the project of a full-width bridge costing well over £15,000 would never have been entertained.” Country subscribers not receiving their Daily News regularly are asked to immediately notify our circulation manager, care Mr. W.
