DISTRICT NEWS.

WHAREROA. (From Our Own Correspondent.) Last Friday night the best dance of this season was held in the local hall, when a large plain and fancy-dress ball was held in aid of the hall funds. Mrs. S. Larcomb and Miss Ballantyne judged the fancy dresses and awarded first prizes to Miss Hicks and to Mr. L. Perry, and second prizes to Mrs. Hicks and to Mr. Western. The waltzing competition was judged by Mrs. Laurenson and Messrs. Nolan and J. Alexander, who awarded the prize to sr. N. Coburn and Mrs. Quillian. This event was closely contested. The following were the dresses worn: Miss Hicks, Persian Lady; Mrs. Hicks, Cleopatra; Mrs. Chapple. Chinese Lady; Mrs. W( Mills, Carmen; Miss Benton, Fatima; Miss Death, Aladdin’s Wife; Miss Mavis Death, Aladdin; Miss Mills, Ragtime; Mr. L. Perry, Bluebeard ; Mr. Smith, Chinaman; Mr. Weston, Merry Widow. ? On July 21 the Hawera Maori Revue Company, under th,e. direction of Mrs. Minhinnix visited Whareroa. and kindly gave a very successful concert in aid of th* local school library funds. The hall was well filled, and many interesting items, consisting of z songs, poi dances, dish bands, and hakas were given. Mr. Reynolds, as chairman, on behalf of the School Committee, thanked the performers for their kindly help in raising funds for so worthy an object. TATARAIMAKA. (From Our Own Correspondent.) The plain and fancy dress social held in Oakura was the destination of ail Tataraimakaites on the 18th. Tataraimaka does not boast a hall, and the not very large school is always called into requisition for enterfa imments (wake up, Tataraimaka), so the social perforce had to travel to a building capable pf holding the large numbers who attended it. A good floor, good music and a fine night all went to make It an undoubted success. The untiring efforts of the organisers (Mesdames Honeyfield and Knight, and Misses Gatenby and Honeyfield) were rewarded by the substantial sum of over £2O. The thanks of the committee are due to Mesdames Bell and W. Morris, and Messrs. Bell, Morris and Mahon, of Oakura, for their kindness in materially helping towards the success of the evening. The fortnightly euchre party on Friday last was well attended by local residents. Mrs. Penwarden, Mrs. Knight, and Miss Ashley tied for ths ladies’ prize, and in the play-off, Mrs. Knight proved the winner. Mr. Percy Smith won the gentlemen’s prize. Misses Honeyfield and Gatenby, and Mr. Belshaw provided the music for dancing, which ' was kept up until the early hours of the morn in g. Extras were played by Miss McGonell. Farmers had the opportunity on Monday, the 10th inst., of hearing Mr. Wood, Government veterinary surgeon, lecture on diseases of cattle. It was very much app'recia.ted, there being a good attendance of local residents. Mr. and Mrs. Saiway, after a short visit to Mrs. Honeyfield, have returned to New Plymouth. Mrs. Gatenby, accompanied by her youngest son, returned from New Plymouth on Miss M. B. Johnstone, B.A. (Otago University), is visiting her mother, Mrs. Knight. Mrs. Johns (Bell Block) is the guest of Mrs. Honeyfield. One of our local bachelors, Mr. ■ Poole, has recently poined the benedicts.and we all wish the young couple every happiness. NGATORO. (From Our Own Correspondent.) The dance held at Dudley School, Ngatoro, qear Inglewood, on Friday last was no exception to the rule obtaining for such gatherings in that locality. A goodly gathering of residents was present, the room had been tastefully decorated, by willing and clever hands, the floor was just as it should be, and the supper was provided by the ladles of the district, a sufficient guarantee of excellence. Mr. Hrbert Baldwin discharged the duties of M. and the notably efficient Ngatoro quartette—Miss Brereton (piano), Messrs. G. Brereton (violin), L. Egarr (picolo), and C. Broadmore (cornet) —provided the music with such invigorating effect that 2 a.un. was reached before dispersal took place.

At the supper interval, Mr. C. Broadmore (chairman of the School Committee), speaking on behalf of the residents of Ngatoro, asked Mr. and Mrs. E. Johnston and their daughter, Jean, to accept the hearty good wishes of all on the eve off their departure for their new home at Waitotara, and as expressions of the esteem in which they were held and mementos of the years they had lived on Dudley Road, to accept a set of stainless cutlery, for Mr. and Mrs. Johnston, and a very tastily designed brooch for Miss Johnston. Mr. Johnston very feeltogly acknowledged the gifts. Mr. George Broadmore, who is also about to leave this, his native home, to engage in farming at Taumarunul, shortly to be combined with matrimony, was likewise the recipient of a suitable parting gift, a deal of wholesome advice, as well as good humored

badinage, as to his future conduct both as farmer and family man, to all of which he replied in like spirit.
