THE LIQUOR TRADE.

STATE CONTROL OF LICENSES. PROPOSAL IN THE HOUSE. By Telegraph.—Press Association. Wellington, Last Night. In the House this afternoon Mr. R. McCallum (Wairau) moved for leave to introduce the State Control of Licenses Bill. He argued that the Bill would have the effect of establishing better control of the trade, and therefore would promote the welfare of the community. Dr. H. T. Thacker (Christchurch East) dwelt upon the evils of prohibition in America. Mr. J. McCombs (Lyttelton) objected to the Bill because of its details, and he predicted that at the next poll New Zealand would go “dry.” Mr. W. D. Lysnar (Gisborne) supported the Bill on the ground that nwlicense had increased instead of decreased the consumption of liquor. It was the duty of the Government to bring down proper remedial measures this session. The Bill was read a first time.
