MIGRATION TO NEW ZEALAND.
AGREEMENT CONCLUDED. . ! By Telegraph.—Pr«<s Assn. —Copyright. London. July 22. i Sir James Allen has practically con.eluded the emigration agreement. He is only awaiting Mr. Amery’s signature on behalf of the Overseas Settlement Com- ! mittee. The agreement to some extent follows the Australian, with modifications to meet New Zealand’s special conditions; for instance, it provides maximum expenditure of C 400,000, to be equally shared with Britain, similar to the Australian agreement, but Sir James Allen explains the actual expenditure probably will not exceed half the i Australian. It is anticipated New Zeai | land’s migration this year will be con- . siderably below last year’s, which totalled ! | 10,000. In the House < i Friday, the Tremier, 1 replying to Mr. Holland’s question whether New Zealand was included in the i document covering emigration, mentionled in a cable from London a/ having been signed, by Australia and Britain eaid that New Zealand, had no part in such an agreement. He explained that
the cable was rather indefinite. What had been agreed upon a year ago was to assist Britain to plac her surplus people in oversea countries in every way possible. Britain had agreed to grant .£3OO per head to enable men to settle down in new countries, and this money would be controlled by the colonial Government. So far as New Zealand was concerned, it was only taking such people as it was able to absorb.
