THE UNEMPLOYED.

THE PIERROTS’ CAMPAIGN. PLANS FOR WEEK’S CARNIVAL. The Pierrots have matters well in hand for their big carnival week to raise funds for the unemployed. Last night a meeting was held in the Soldiers’ Club, when the programme for the week was decided on. Air. H. Broolcman, who occupied the chair, outlined what had been done and the difficulties that had been encountered. The executive had a very big job ahead of them to get everything properly organised in such a short time and they had also to consider what the ladies’ committee were doing. Mrs. £E. A. Walker, of the ladies’ committee. said that they had their part well in hand. They had received many offers of goods and a number of ladies had undertaken to cook meats, etc., for them. Mr. J. McLeod, in moving that the action of the executive in abandoning the proposal to hold a cabaret for a week be approved, said that the general opinion was that the original proposal would not hold interest for a whole week. They would do much better to concentrate their efforts on the art union, the .football match, and the Paddy’s market. The tradespeople had responded excellently to their requests for donations and if the public responded in like manner success was assured.

It was made clear that while the Pierrots would give their main attention to these events, they had the Coronation Hall for six nights and that any other committee could be formed to organise entertainments on the nights the hall would not be in use. On this Mr*. .Jenkins, Mf. McLeod, and. Air. Binney ,undertook- to organise a hard-up social, a community sing, and a combined euchre party and dance respectively. The programme for the wefek will therefore be as follows:—Tuesday night, hard-up social with torch light procession from the Post Office; Wednesday afternoon, football match between Tukapa and Hawera at Pukekura Park, with a .-or nunity sing at night; Thursday night, euchre party and dance; Friday and Friday evening, Paddy’s market, in conjunction with the ladies’ committee; Saturday afternoon, a children's Plunket dance and a grand masquerade and confetti ball in the evening for adults.

In the twilight procession prizes will be given to the best “hard up” dressed lady and gentleman actually taking part in the procession. Air. Day will organise the proce.--’ • with a small committee of Pierrots. and Mrs. Weston and Airs. Walker are to be asked to judge the costumes. The procession will leave at 7.30 and the co-operation of the Regimental and Ripe bands, is being sought. The dances on Saturday will be under the charge of Airs. Weston .and- Airs. Walker, and-the Pierrots will assist these ladies as well,as those, in charge of the other evenings. ... . . . .. . ■

. Plentiful supplies of meat, groceries, and all sorts of things suitable for quick selling have been promised and the Paddy’s market should be a big success. The country districts are being canvassed by an energetic committee and there are no lack of offers of live stock in the way of bullocks, sheep, lambs, turkeys, etc., which will be killed ready for the market under arrangements being made by the committees.

It was unanimously decided that, out of deference to Aliss Rosina Buckman, the Pierrots should not hold any entertainment on the first day of their carnival week, when Miss Buckman will be singing in New Plymouth.
