WAITARA.
(From Our Own Correspondent.) July 20. The Chamber of Commerce have had proposals placed before them id respect to a shipping service between here and main ports, and they intend to go into the matter. Goods landed at Wait ar a would effect a very large saving, and such a scheme should receive general support. At the Waitara Retailers’ Association meeting on Monday evening, it was decided to have a special shopping week, beginning on December 11. Special window displays will be made and prizes will be offered for the best designs and for the most novel feature. Mr. V/. Dernehl had a painful experience a few days ago, whilst spraying fruit trees with Bordeaux mixture. Something went wro. with the pump, and in examining it he received the full force of the pump’s contents in his eyes. It was feared at first that the chemical would affect his sight, but skilled treatment has averted the danger. Some of the timber of the Waitara Harbor Board’s boatshed, which is being demolished to make way for a concrete structure, came from the Sampson and other vessels wrecked at the river entrance many years ago. The panelled doors of the deckhouses are of teak, and are in particularly good order. Mr. Frank Hoskin, the North Ward representative on the Taranaki Education Board, has been informed that a grant of £2OO had been made by the department for remodelling the Waitara School. Such an amount is not sufficient. Tfie very first essential is increased accommodation, and £2OO would do little in that direction. Mr. Hoskin and the committee are protesting against such treatment of a serious matter, and it is hoped the grant will be cancelled.
