FOOTBALL.
THE RUGBY CAME. Maoris v. north Auckland. By Telegraph.—Press Association. Whangarei, Last Night. This afternoon the New Zealand Maori Rugby football representatives played the first match after their return from their Australian tour against a North Auckland representative fifteen, and won by 13 points to 9. £!ATCH AT NEW PLYMOUTH. NEWTON KING, LTD'S STAFFS. Brilliant in patches, but highly amusjng throughout, fairly accurately describes the game played at Pukekura Park, New Plymouth. yesterday between teams representing Messrs. Newton King, Ltd.’s New Plymouth staff and the combined staffs of the Stratford, Kaponga and Inglewood branches of the firm. The visitors won by 8 points to 3. New Plymouth, before they lost their first wind, attacked with vigor, Kirk setting his backs going near the Stratford line, but the effort failed. The combined team then took up the attack, bringing play back into New Plymouth’s twenty-five, where Fearon' made a dash which nearly ended in a score. Court, however, was handy and picked up the ball, scoring behind the -posts. Sharrock converted. Shortly after the kick off the ball came to Cameron, who ran down the side-line, kicking in-field when stopped. Walsh secured possession and dashed over the line near the posts. Oliver put plenty of force behind the kick, sending the ball out on to the road, but unfortunately it did not sail between thp uprights en route. A penalty kick by Sharrock missed. Then Kirk and Cameron were allied in a passing bout, the ball being tossed round freely till an opponent slipped in and marked. Half-time, which was ap parently welcomed by most of the players, came fust afterwards with the score: Combined team 5, New Plymouth 3.
Oliver got into his stride early in the second spell, making a good run, which resulted in Walsh nearly getting over again. Oliver next tried a penalty kick, but the ball only rose about six inches. Sharrock led his side back in quest of another score and tried a “drop’' at goal, but the ball did not quite get there. The visitors threw the ball about freely and looked like scoring, but thgir passing was faulty. New Plymouth carried the ball over in the face of a dangerous rush, and a five yards’ scrum Fearon took a mark in a, favourable position and attempted a "pot" at goal. The effort was not crowned with success. Still the visitors maintained the pressure, an exciting race for the ball as it crossed the line being ended by Valentine booting hard for the dead-ball line. Oliver was off-side a little later and the visitors were awarded a free kick, which was successfully taken advantage of by Sharrock Tile teams were obviously tiring, but New Plymouth made a final dash, giving the leaders a strenuous five minutes defending their goalline. However, Fortune frowned on the effort and the final whistle brought relief shortly after, the score being:— Combined team ............. 8 New Plymouth 3 Mr. J. O’Shea refereed. The proceeds of the match were in aid of the Sports Ground Committee and amounted to £8 16s. CENTRAL DIVISION. FIRST JUNIORS.
