White’s Corner., Stratford. the people of Taranaki were not satisfied -with the progress of the improvement works, taking into account the board’s position. He urged the board not to think that they were perfect. There was so far not much to show for the money spent, and he considered that no promises should be made that the proposed levy should not be further increased. Mr. Newton King pointed out that there was*a considerable saving to importers since the shipping companies’ charge of 5s per ton on goods to New Plymouth, which, it had been said, was rot one of the principal ports, had been withdrawn. The motion was then carried. It will be necessary for it to be confirmed later, and a special meeting of the board is called for August 3 for this purpose. The chairman intimated that it was hoped to put the levy into operation on September 1.
