ELTHAM.

THE FIRE BRIGADE. (From Our Own Correspondent.) July 19. j The annual meeting of the Eltham Fire I Brigade was held last evening, Superin- I tendent H. A. Nuttall presidingiover a full muster of the brigade. \ The report stated: Last year’s balance sheet showed a credit balance of £29 10s 7d; this has been increased to £35 12s 4d, an increase of £6 Is 9d. The cost of working the brigade for the year has been rather high, owing to the number of fires during the year. Our services have been requisitioned on no fewer than six occasions. The loss to insurance companies has been £24,000, apart from the very serious loss the owners sustained and the town generally. During the year 34 meetings Save been held, the average attendance of members being 32 out of a possible 34, Secretary Hinch securing the possible. This shows the keen interest of the members in the work of the brigade. In moving the adoption of the report and balance sheet, Supt. Nuttall said that the brigade had had an exceedingly heavy year in expenditure, but there was a certain amount of expenditure, however, that had to be entailed. They had given generously to relief funds, and they felt proud to know that they were always to the fore in this respect. Mr. I. J. Bridger congratulated the brigade on the past year’s working. He regretted that the borough councillors were conspicuous by their absence from this meeting, but he considered that the council were absolutely satisfied with the brigade’s work. He considered that Eltham ought to fee! proud of the brigade generally, and it did appreciate the brigade’s efforts during the past year. The election of officers resulted: Superintendent, Mr. H. A. Nuttall; deputysuperintendent, Mr. S. Murray; first foreman. Mr. E. Henn; second foreman, Mr. T. Glentworth; secretary, Mr. A. Hinch; treasurer, Mr. H. A. Nuttall; auditor, Mr. E. Parrott; hon. surgeon, Dr. H. A. Cooper; caretaker. Mr. S. Murray; standing committee, all officers ex officio and Firemen Philpott and Burrows. The secretary’s honorarium was fixed at £5 ss. It was resolved to ask the Borough Council to place an alarm bell in Fireman Hasting’s house, the bell not .always being audible in his vicinity, and it was necessary that he should be on the scene of a fire at the earliest possible moment. It was also decided to ask the council to instal a telephone in DeputySupt. Murray’s residence.
