The fortnightly .jneeting of the New •Plymouth branch of the Victoria League was held last night, when Archdeacon F. G. Evans gave a fine address on “Patriotism.” The speaker had carefully arranged his subject, which he dealt with from the historic standpoint, going back to the day of the Spartans and Romans. The address was interspersed with readings by Mrs, Evans. The president (Mrs. C. H. Burgess) was in the chair. At the conclusion of the address a hearty vote of thanks was accorded the lecturer on the motion of Mr. C. H. Burgess. A musical programme had been arranged by Mr. D. H. Thomson, Misses Cooper, Sutherland and D. Abbott contributing, items, for which the accompaniments were played by Mrs F. P. Fredric.

The abattoirs report submitted to the New Plymouth Borough Council at last night’s meeting by the manager T. J. Reakes) stated that for the month of June stock slaughtered comprised: Cattle 200> calves 16, sheep 953, pigs 116, and 199 tripes were cleaned. Compared with last June they show an increase of 45 pigs and a decrease of 36 cattle, 11 calves, 51 sheep and 13 tripes. One cow and 3 pigs were condemned. Fees totalled £174 9s. This is a decrease of £8 9s 8d compared with June, 1921. As an expression of appreciation, to the young lady helpers the Taranaki Agricultural Society tendered these ladies a complimentary euchre party and dance at the Workers’ Social Hall, New Plymouth, last night. The lower hall proved all too small to accommodate comfortably the 90 card players who attended. Seventeen games of euchre were played, the first prize, a handbag given by an anonymous donor, being won by Mrs. Lawrence (Vogeltown) with 13 games, whilst Mrs. Gilbert (New Plymouth), with 12} games, won the second prize, a -vase donated by Mr. C. Carter. The men’s first prize, a cake donated by Mr. Shepherd, was, won by Mr. Yates (Vogeltown), with 13} games, whilst the second prize, a pair of motor gloves given by Messrs. Newton King, Ltd., was won by Mr. F. Sampson (Sentry Hill), with 12} games. Dancing was indulged in simultaneously with the euchre, the hall being well filled. The music was provided by Mr. Fred Boulton’s orchestra, the M.C.’s being Messrs. L. Sampson (Hillsborough) and Arthur Lister (Frankley Road). Dancing was kept up till a late hour, a thoroughly enjoyable evening being spent. The F.C.O.S. will hold a clearing sale of cows, rtc., at their Hawena yards tomorrow, on account of Mr. Jas. Alexander. • Members of the New Plymouth Commerce Students’ Society are reminded elsewhere that the riext meeting of the Society will be held in May and Arrowsmith’s tea rooms on Tuesday evening (18th), at 5.30 p.m., when Mr. J. C. Nicholson will give an address on “Bills of Sale.” Owing to the importance of the subject the society has. generously extended an invitation to the public' to attend. It is to be hoped that advantage will be taken to hear this address. I
