THE TRAMWAYS.

LAST MONTH’S FIGURES. DECREASE IN REVENUE. Reporting upon the working of the New Plymouth tramways for the month of June, the borough electrical engineer (Mr. R. H. Bartley) states: A comparison of the traffic revenue for June, 1922, against June, 1921, shows a decrease of £159 7s 6d, and that the passengers carried are 12,777 less. The figures for June, 1921, were: Revenue, £1626 7s 7d, and 153,578 passengers; and for June, 1922, £1467 0s Id and 140,801 passengers. This falling-off of the revenue is a serious matter, and, although all expenditures except those necessary for present conditions have been stopped for some weeks past, unless some improvement is in sight in the near future, it may be necessary to adopt a policy whereby a further shortening-up of the expenditure can he made. The detailed returns for the month are: Main Route.—Mileage run, 15,371; passengers carried, 129,242; fares, £l3Bl Ils 7d. Morley Street-Strandon Route.—2s49 ; 11,559; £B5 8s 6d. Combined Routes.- J -17,920; 140,801; £1467 0s Id, The engineer added that the whole of the plant and equipment was operating satisfactorily, and he had no irregularities to report.
